The Watauga River tailwater begins after the Wilbur Dam and flows 16 miles to Boone Lake. The water flows from the dam and maintains a consistent temperature year-round, so it offers great fishing in every season. Watauga means “river of plenty” in Cherokee—and it definitely has a lot to offer. The river is stocked with over 6,000 fish per mile, including trophy brown trout and rainbow trout. That’s why Watauga is known as one of the best places for trout fishing in all of Tennessee! The aquatic insects are also abundant in the Watauga, including blue-winged olives, sulphur mayflies, crane flies, and caddis. It is extremely important to pay attention to when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is generating. When the dam is generating, fly fishing must be done by boat and not waded. South Holston River, or “SoHo,” is a 14-mile tailwater that starts at the South Holston Dam and eventually flows into Boone Lake. It is the sister to the beautiful Watauga River. As a tailwater, the water temperature in the South Holston stays consistent in all seasons. This provides plenty of fly fishing opportunities all year round. The beautiful SoHo has earned a reputation for being one of the best rivers in the United States for trout fishing. The SoHo has around 8,500 brown and rainbow trout per mile, ranging from 16 to 22 inches long. These wild brown trout are unique for a tailwater. You can wade the South Holston when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) isn’t generating. Otherwise, you’ll need a drift boat to fly fish in the river. Here at East Tennessee Guide Service, we believe you will do better fishing-wise on a boat. Our fly fishing guide will show you the beauty of the South Holston Lake and its surrounding areas.
