South Holston River, or “SoHo,” is a 14-mile tailwater that starts at the South Holston Dam and eventually flows into Boone Lake. It is the sister to the beautiful Watauga River. As a tailwater, the water temperature in the South Holston stays consistent in all seasons. This provides plenty of fly fishing opportunities all year round. The beautiful SoHo has earned a reputation for being one of the best rivers in the United States for trout fishing. The SoHo has around 8,500 brown and rainbow trout per mile, ranging from 16 to 22 inches long. These wild brown trout are unique for a tailwater. You can wade the South Holston when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) isn’t generating. Otherwise, you’ll need a drift boat to fly fish in the river.
