The Cowlitz River in southwest Washington is the states largest producer of hatchery steelhead. Because of its large runs, there are fish arriving almost all year long. With tens of thousands of steelhead entering this river each year, this is the place to nail a steelhead on the fly. Another reason anglers flock to the “Cow”, is because of the numbers of coho salmon that arrive in the river from October through December. The Cowlitz gets a bad rap as being a gear anglers haunt, and it is, but there are some great runs and pools to fish where most gear anglers are not to be found. From Barrier Dam down, the river winds through tall timber and lush landscapes on its way to the trout hatchery at Blue Creek. Although winters in Washington can be dreary with gray skies and horizontal rain, the summers can be the exact opposite with blue bird skies and very warm temperatures. On these days choose to swing traditional fly patterns to summer steelhead or toss small dry flies and streamers to the enormous number of cutthroat trout that reside in the river as well. Our Cowlitz River fly fishing guide trips are intended to be fun and educational. Our experienced staff of spey casting instructors are passionate about swinging flies and helping our guests become proficient in the craft of spey casting. We highly recommend the use of spey rods on this and all the Puget Sound rivers. We have a full line of them for you to use from Winston, Scott and Sage and our guides are accomplished spey casters and instructors more than happy to teach you this unique style of fly fishing. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we work to provide you with an exceptional fly fishing adventure. Seattle's urban trout fly fishing mecca from June through August. The Cedar River is the primary tributary to Lake Washington, just southeast of downtown Seattle about 20 minutes. This little known river in the middle of this sprawling urban setting is a west side gem for fly anglers. One of the few rivers in the state with strict regulations regarding how you can fish. Closed completely to fishing until 17 years ago to protect the steelhead and salmon spawning runs in the river, it was reopened in 2004 for 3 months, June through August. The success of the river as a trout fishery quickly caught notice of local anglers and the community has fought to keep it a catch and release fishery with single barbless hooks. On the Cedar River there are basically 21 miles of fishable water, from the mouth in Renton to Landsburg Bridge. To say the river doesn’t get fished hard would be a lie, but at the same time, most anglers are not willing to walk too far to fish. With low water levels during the summer months, the Cedar is easily waded almost its entire length, fishing as you go. This gets you away from the easy access points and into where there are some big trout. Because this river was closed for so long, some of the trout in this river have grown to extremely large size, over 24 inches. While there are smaller trout in this stream, there are other places less inhabited by humans to catch small fish. This should be considered a trophy trout fishery and one should not expect to be catching fish of this caliber every 5-10 minutes, more like a few a day. These fish are all native and some also believe that some of the rainbow in the river are of steelhead descent. As hard as these fish fight, do not come with wimpy rods as some of us learned the hard way last year, come prepared for a fight! Of all the Olympic Peninsula steelhead fly fishing guides, we have always been a swing only guide service and have been pursuing our wild steelhead this way the longest. Stepping onto Washington’s Olympic Peninsula lands you smack dab in the middle of winter steelheading’s hallowed ground. Inch for inch this area provides both opportunity and sustenance to the steelhead fanatic. Winter steelhead fly-fishers seem to be imbued with a strange quirk not generally seen in genes of the normal fly flinger. The ability to survive and even revel in abusive weather conditions, cold water, lethargic fish tendencies, shortened days and bleak conditions that scream, “stay home” are all part of the magic and legend surrounding winter fish on the fly. In reality the quiet solitude, peaceful unhurried pace and dramatic possibilities make this a “must do” experience for serious fly anglers. As in most cases the rewards are commensurate with the challenges overcome. During the prime months, due to weather and water conditions we guide the following rivers which are all within striking distance of Forks. On any given day, water flows could alter plans so we are always prepared to fish any of these: Hoh River Sol Duc River Bogachiel River Queets River Calawah River Our Olympic Peninsula steelhead fly fishing guides are all masters of the two handed rod as well as patient and experienced instructors to help novice and experienced spey fishers come way with a great experience and leave an improved caster and angler. Puget Sound Walk and Wade Fly Fishing

Seattle, Washington

Many, but not all, visitors to the Seattle and Tacoma areas believe Puget Sound to be the open ocean when in fact it is a huge maze of bays and inlets reaching from Bellingham to Olympia. While the Sound is affected by tides and is saltwater, it remains a very different watershed from the coastal ocean. One of the primary differences is the protection from the Olympic Peninsula which forms a barrier between the coastal ocean and the Sound.

One of western Washington’s many great watersheds, the Skagit in winter and early spring is an annual journey for many dedicated fly-fishers. Local folks as well as those from afar, travel to the Skagit in hopes of fulfilling a dream of the coveted, twenty pounder on a fly. The take alone of a fifteen-pound or better wild steelhead is enough to test the condition of one’s heart. There is no need for a stress test from your local physician if you survive the adrenalin-stoked minutes connected to one of these beautiful chrome specimens. If you don’t… what a great swan song! Those new to the river will be well served by utilizing a guide, being persistent and maintaining the mind-set of enjoying the complete experience regardless of fish count at the end of the day. Time spent in such pursuit is said to add days to your life and what better way to spend a few each year. The Skagit’s grand setting will provide memorable angling moments and undoubtedly embed on with an itch to return each year. During winter months the Skagit is also home to one of the largest migrations of bald eagles in the lower forty-eight. If winter steelheading is not in the cards, pink salmon and chum make strong runs in August and late fall respectively. Also inhabiting the Skagit are large Dolly Varden and some sea-run cutthroat in the lower river. Controlled by several dams on the upper river the Skagit generally flows fairly clear down to Rockport and the confluence with the Sauk. We highly recommend the use of spey rods on this and the Sauk. Here at EWA, we pride ourselves on searching out new and exciting fisheries in our area to provide diverse and unique fly fishing opportunities for visitors to the Seattle area. We constantly work to uncover virtually undiscovered fisheries in our area and we are happy to offer our newest discovery, Cascade Mountain Creeks. The PNW is known for its steelhead and salmon therefore most anglers in the area focus their efforts on anadromous species. The result is a lack of attention to fly fishing creeks of which Washington has a ton of them. Nearly every blue line on a map is likely home to some willing trout species just waiting for your dry fly. For those who enjoy minimalist fly fishing or fishing fiberglass, bamboo or extremely lightweight rods, these fisheries are for you.We recommend employing rods no larger than a 3wt and usually use 00 – 1wt rods to cast size 14-20 attractor and imitative patterns. Some of these fisheries require above average wading skills as they are sometimes forged by wading or scrambling over log jams. While this can be difficult, the rewards are well worth the effort. For the novice angler, fly fishing creeks can be the easiest and most enjoyable point of entry into the sport with will participants on both ends of the rod coming together regularly. Pricing: Full Day $545 – Half Day $445 – $100 Additional 3rd Angler – All equipment included – Fishing License, WA Sales Tax and Gratuity not included Season: June – October Species: Native Westslope and Coastal Cutthroat, Rainbow Trout EWA Cancellation Policy Book Now | 206-708-7250 Additional Information: Flies: Caddis, Stimulators, Humpy, Adams, Royal Wulff, Royal Coachman, H & L Variant Ideal Season: Late June through mid October Clothing/Equipment Lists: Summer season Rods and Lines: 000 – 3wt rods with floating floating line, glass or bamboo rods Species: Native Westslope and Coastal Cutthroat, Rainbow trout Duration: Half day trip 4-5 hours fishing time, full day trip 8-9 hours fishing time Distance from Seattle: 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours

Guided Yakima River fly fishing trips from Seattle. Fly fishing the Yakima River as it slowly meanders its way from its headwaters atop Snoqualmie Pass, through Cle Elum towards the city of Yakima is a quintessential Washington experience. The stretch known best to fly anglers is from Easton Dam to Rosa Dam which in 1990 and 1991 was designated as a catch and release wild rainbow trout fishery. This stretch of river flows through both scenic canyon and farmland sections continually reminding anglers of the beauty of this sport we love. Fly fishing the Yakima River is open all year and can at times offer some great dry fly fishing for wild rainbows and in the upper reaches native Westslope Cutthroat. The “Yak” as it is referred to by nearly everyone in the state is really the only year around dedicated fly fishing/artificial lure river managed as such in the entire state of Washington so it bears at times some heavy angling pressure. Typically beginning in February Skwala stoneflies begin to appear followed shortly after or at times simultaneously by a strong Baetis/Blue Winged Olive hatch. As with most tail-water fisheries this marks the start of what can be an exciting dry fly season with PMD’s, caddis and some Salmonflies taking us into the summer season. Come mid June, the Yakima is used for irrigation water for the agricultural mecca of the Yakima Valley where all forms of produce and wines are grown and produced. During this time water flows are quite high, weather is generally hot with considerable wind and nymphing is the game for much of the day. August will bring a mild hopper season and once the river recedes back down to fall and winter flows of 1500cfs or less, the dry flies are back on until about mid November. Winter can be quite cold leaving few anglers to pursue these fish and flows are often very low making easy walk and wade water access from top to bottom of the Yakima.
