Stevens Point is known as the Fly-Tying Capital of America and what better place to learn, improve or simplify your casting a fly rod then with us at Fall Line Outfitters Co.! Our professional staff of anglers are ready to show you the basic instruction of casting, different techniques, the components of the rod, line and reel while in a fun and relaxing enjoinment. All casting instruction are 2 hours in length. Lessons meet at the shop downtown Stevens Point then will head to a local park for "dry land casting" then you'll transition to casting a fly in the local stream. Rain or shine so dress appropriately for conditions.

Central Wisconsin Night Hatches or Mousing

Have you ever experienced the Hexagenia (Hex) Fly Hatch in Central Wisconsin or the Brown Drake Hatch in Northern Wisconsin? This is a special time of the year for any trout fisherman. These hatches are known to bring out the largest fish in the streams to feed on the surface. Our guides will spend the entire evening with you teaching, mentoring, and helping you fly fish in the dark and get on some amazing fish during this unique time. This is 1 on 1 ratio guided trip that will take you to some of the most productive streams for this kind of fishing in Northern and Central Wisconsin. Furthermore, around this time of year, we begin to target big browns with mice patterns when they transition to doing most of their feeding during low-light periods and or at night. During summer, try your hand at Smallmouth Bass in the Wisconsin River or in the many lakes we have in the immediate area. This area is referenced as the “Central Sands Region” which makes great wading in most of the rivers. With vast knowledge of the Wisconsin River, local lakes, and streams, our professional guides will ensure your time on the water is educational and enjoyable. Learn on the Water!

Learn on the Water

Individual or private group fly fishing class

Our Learn on the Water class turns you into a fly angler in a single day! Ideal for the beginning angler, this low-pressure learning opportunity can be scheduled to fit with your availability.

Phase one takes place in the Fall Line Outfitters classroom where we’ll decode all the gear, knots, and flies you’ll need to get started. After a lunch break, we'll reconvene streamside for phase 2. Here you’ll learn the basic mechanics of fly casting, safe wading practices, “reading the water”, delivering flies to their intended targets, and line management. Before you know it, you’ll be fly fishing!

No prior experience or gear is necessary to take this class. If you do have your own gear though, please bring it! It is always best to learn with what you will be using most often. Fall Line Outfitters can provide waders, boots, and fly rod outfits for those who need them at no extra cost! Our primary goal is to start your fly-fishing journey off on the right foot, one where the barriers to entry are low, assistance is readily available, and memorable experiences are had in beautiful places.

At the time of the class, you are expected to have a WI fishing license with trout stamp,and must sign our release of liability waiver. We also recommend bringing polarized sunglasses, water, sun/insect protection, and weather appropriate clothing.

Smallmouth Float Trip - Full Day

Anglers looking for solitude and endless opportunities for smallmouth on the fly, don’t need to look any farther than one of the many wild and scenic rivers located in North Central Wisconsin. This area is well known for producing abundant, under-fished populations of trophy smallmouth bass. We have put together numerous offerings that provide exceptional fly fishing experiences within this world-class fishery. For some, the scenery alone is worth with! But for the serious angler seeking a shot at a trophy Smallmouth with a fly rod in hand, we got you covered. We usually begin targeting Smallmouth in the early spring. If you enjoy streamer fishing, this is the time to go. As the season progresses and we enter the hottest months of the year, we transition to the top water game.

Spring Steelhead - Full Day

Lake Michigan, Wisconsin

At the end of winter, when the ice and snow begin to melt and the warm spring rains start to come, Lake Michigan Steelhead begin their migratory journey up the tributaries to start their spawning process. Water temperatures, water flows, and weather work together to determine when fish begin to enter the tributaries. Generally speaking, these runs occur from late March through April. Fishing strategy will depend on conditions but will mostly consist of nymphing and swinging fly techniques. Be warned, steelhead fishing can be extremely addicting! It can be a grind, but in the end, you will only remember the feeling of having one of these chrome beauties at the end of your line.
